NEW DAWN, NEW DAY: Looking Forward To High Sierra Music Festival 2026 In Grass Valley, CA

The High Sierra Music Festival undergoes a monumental rebirth for its 34th annual iteration. From July 2–5, 2026, the legendary gathering transitions from its three-decade home in Quincy to the sprawling, gorgeous Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, California.

The cosmic axis of the West Coast festival scene is shifting. For many Independence Day weekends, the Plumas County Fairgrounds served as our sacred, dusty crucible, a mountain sanctuary where the music washed over us like a Sierra thunderstorm in the desert heat.

But evolution is an absolute necessity in this game, and change is the only true currency. The long-running independent institution has loaded up the caravans and migrated down into the Gold Country foothills.

This is a strategic renaissance. The fresh Grass Valley digs bring a wealth of newfound creature comforts, simplified access, and room to stretch, all while fiercely preserving the community-driven magic that built this festival family in the first place.

Dotted with towering sugar pine trees, a scenic lake, and immaculate classic buildings, the venue is widely celebrated as “California’s Most Beautiful Fairgrounds”. Four open-air stages will anchor the sonic geometry, while the new version of the High Sierra Music Hall hosts sweat-soaked late-night ragers.

The musical curation for this inaugural Grass Valley chapter is a masterclass in psychedelic rock, funky greasy grooves, tear-jerker porch songs, and cross-generational sound art. Leading the charge is the long-awaited resurrection of The Word, the celebrated sacred steel supergroup featuring the combined powers of John Medeski, Robert Randolph, and the North Mississippi Allstars. It has been three long years since this collective last blew minds, and their ecstatic gospel-funk fusion is engineered to elevate the Sierra faithful into a grateful state of euphoria. Sharing the marquee is the iconic British funk collective Cymande, who are renowned for serving up sexy rare-groove and psychedelic soul.

The culture deepens significantly with the arrival of Don Was & The Pan-Detroit Ensemble, alongside a heavy-hitting contingent of festival royalty. Roots-reggae titans Steel Pulse will deliver their timeless, conscious rasta vibrations under the stars, while Crescent City royalty Dumpstaphunk and HSMF faves Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe ensure the dancefloor stays thoroughly lubricated. NOLA’s premier chaunteuse Anna Moss returns to serenade the faithful with her solo band as well as beloved duo Handmade Moments, and Los Angeles guitarist/vocalist Judith Hill is sure to stun the masses with her powerful blend of soul, rock, funk, and overall sorcery.

The lineage of elite collaboration continues with a massive Lebo & Friends set. Guitar wizard Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz has assembled an all-star vanguard featuring bass patriarch George Porter Jr., rhythm king Jay Lane, powerhouse trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick, and keyboard enchantress Holly Bowling.

As the sun dips below the foothills, the sonic palette expands into every corner of modern exploratory music. The fast-rising jam phenoms Eggy will make their presence felt alongside the blistering pickin’ of Mountain Grass Unit and the cinematic, progtronic post-rock of lespecial. New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian traditions get a fierce modern jolt from The Rumble.  From the gritty blues-rock of Anders Osborne, the fantastic organ-trio supergroup The Breaks, teenage NOLA prodigy River Eckert, Colombian psych trio BALTHVS, freaky upcomers Psycodelics, local faves Boot Juice and Smoked Out Soul, the festival ensures that an eclectic variety of musical appetites are catered to and satiated.

The foundational elements remain non-negotiable. You can fully expect the glorious daily costume parades, the mind-expanding Artist Playshops, perennial mayor of HSMF Steve Poltz, the intimate, acoustic Troubadour Sessions (this year featuring the debut of NOLA sensation Sari Jordan!), Plus the mythic Sunrise Kickball chaos should return in full force and extreme spectacle.

This transition is an invitation to write a bold, beautiful new chapter together. The logistics are smoother since it is a breeze to reach from the Bay Area and Sacramento. Additionally, the surrounding area boasts ample lodging options for those looking to balance the dust with a little luxury. Yet, the soul of High Sierra is a living organism that lives within the people, the theme camps, decadent funk dancefloors, and the shared acoustic moments under the pines. Grab your passes, pack your finest costumes, and prepare to step into the future of Northern California’s finest midsummer dream.
